ENVIRONMENTAL INITIATIVES
RECYCLING STRATEGY
A corporate recycling strategy is co-ordinated and managed centrally with the overall aim of reducing the quantity of waste being sent to landfill.
3663 recycles as many waste streams as possible and ensures a strict programme of segregation is implemented before recycling takes place.
Located strategically around the UK, 12 depots have baling machines installed. These depots not only bale their own packaging waste; cardboard and stretch wrap but act as recycling hubs whereby other depots backhaul their packaging waste. This initiative not only generates a revenue from the sale of baled material but also reduces the cost of sending to landfill.
ENVIRONMENTAL LABELLING
A programme to place appropriate environmental labels and symbols on 3663's own brand Smart Choice, Coronet and Springbourne, has been in operation for a number of years and is ongoing as new product ranges are introduced.
Currently, 98% of own brand products bear the Tidy Man symbol, 60% of primary packaging bear symbols that indicate that the packaging is recyclable, 98% of secondary packaging indicates that it has a recycled content.
TRANSPORT
3663 is constantly searching for new ways to reduce the environmental impact of its fleet. All vehicles are regularly maintained to ensure the utmost in efficiency and low emissions and all drivers receive efficiency training. Computerise routing systems are also used to optimise routes, reduce fuel usage and minimise residential nuisance.
Approximately 50% of the fleet now uses a bio-diesel mix and a number of the fleet have Continuous Regenerating Traps (CRT) fitted to improve environmental performance, providing air quality improvements.
BUILDING PROGRAMME
An environmental specification document has been, and is continually being, developed for new build depots and those being refurbished. This ensures that, where possible, environmental features that often has cost saving implications, are considered in the design stages.
3663’s design concept within new build and refurbishment programmes ensures a sustainable development ethos supported by commercial and energy savings.
Features include:
- Rainwater harvesting systems installed in new depots at Birmingham, Harlow and Edinburgh; the collected water being used to wash the vehicle fleet.
- Sensor lighting - to all offices, toilets and landing/corridor areas.
- Heat recovery unit - heat is a by product of the refrigeration plant, this is reused to heat the glycol mat that prevents the floor from freezing.
- Carpet tiles made from recycled carpet tiles are now used in new depot office areas and those where refurbishment has taken place, thereby closing the loop.
